Baseball Gives CSUDH a Scare, but Ultimately Falls 5-2

Box Score

Facing the number two team in the CCAA Conference on the road, Cal State San Marcos baseball gave Cal State Dominguez-Hills a scare on Friday, but the Toros ultimately prevailed 5-2.

The Cougars fall to 22-11-1 this season, while CSUDH improves to 25-10.

CSUSM's pitching staff did a good job throughout of largely shutting down the Toros' power game at the plate, surrendering just one extra base hit.  Kyle Smart made the start, allowing two runs in three innings of work, and relievers Auggie Richardson and Mitch Ferguson both threw 1 2/3 innings of shutout ball to keep CSUSM in the game.

Down 2-0 heading into the fifth inning, the Cougar offense would get on the board, as Ryle Parks ripped a one-out double and came home to score on an error.  CSUSM would tie it up the following inning, with Kevin Silvett doubling home Kyle Secciani to make it 2-2.

That score would hold until the bottom of the eighth, when CSUDH would finally break through against the Cougar bullpen.  A close play at first that went the Toros' way opened up the inning, as CSUDH plated three runs to go up 5-2.  The Cougars threatened in the top of the ninth, bringing the tying run to the plate three times, but reliever Matt Phillips closed out the game.

Reliever Eric Julienne took the loss for CSUSM.  Toros' starter Brett Anderson went seven strong innings, allowing just four hits.  Phillips entered in the eighth and picked up the win.

Cougar baseball will be back on the mound Monday at Biola University.
