Cal State San Marcos women's basketball was four minutes away from recording a very impressive first-ever victory for the program, but NCAA Division II opponent Humboldt State came roaring back to nip the Cougars 78-75.
CSUSM falls to 0-2 in its first-ever season of competition. The game was officially an exhibition for Humboldt State.
While no team likes being 0-2, for Cougar women's basketball, that record is wildly deceiving. Coupled with last night's nail-biting loss at Sonoma State, Coach Sheri Jennum's squad has now gone toe-to-toe with two NCAA schools on the road on back-to-back days in the program's first-ever two games, and had the ball at the end of both with a chance to win or tie. Though nobody is in the business of picking up moral victories, this early showing certainly bodes well for the team, which competes in the NAIA Division II.
Danielle Cooper continued to dominate inside for CSUSM, leading the team in scoring for the second straight game. Cooper recorded 18 points on 7-for-10 shooting and added 7 rebounds in just 24 minutes of action. Fellow post player
Gabriell Munsch added 10 points and 6 boards, shooting a perfect 6-for-6 from the charity stripe.
Swingman Michel'La Logan had the best game of her young career, scoring 14 points on 6-of-10 shooting and tying Cooper for the team lead with 7 rebounds. Point guard
Sidney Dobner led the team with 7 assists and recorded 14 points.
CSUSM shot the ball well, connecting on 40% of their threes (4/10) and 87.5% of their free throws (21/24). Meanwhile, the Cougars limited Humboldt to 41% from the field.
After being down as many as 6 in the first half, the Cougars stormed back to take a 40-33 lead on the back of a 13-0 run to close the half. A big three by
Cassie Damyanovich and a jumper by Dobner with 5 seconds left highlighted the run.
The Cougars would maintain the lead through most of the second half, leading 71-65 with 4 minutes remaining. But it was Humboldt who would close the game with a decisive run, outscoring CSUSM 13-4 from that point on to win the game.
CSUSM will be back at it tomorrow at another NCAA opponent, Chico State.
