Sandberg, Miller, Lacey Named NAIA All-Americans

Sandberg named First Team, Miller Second Team, Lacey Honorable Mention

Official NAIA Release

Cal State San Marcos pitcher Brenna Sandberg, second baseman Alex Miller, and outfielder Derrisha Lacey have all earned spots on the 2011 NAIA Softball All-American team.

The NAIA released the list of First Team, Second Team, and Honorable Mention All-Americans on Thursday, and Cal State San Marcos has a representative on each.

Sandberg, who last season became the program's first All-American, set another milestone this year by being the first CSUSM player named to the First Team.  The senior righty posted an NAIA-best 41-10 record and led the nation with 323.2 innings pitched.  She finished third in the nation in strikeouts (390), sixth in ERA (1.02), and seventh in opponents' batting average (.141).  She is one of three pitchers named to the First Team.

Freshman Alex Miller burst onto the scene in her first year of collegiate competition, and was rewarded for her efforts by being named a Second Team All-American.  The second baseman batted .412 with a lofty .697 slugging percentage, drilling six home runs and recording 52 RBI.  She finished among the top 25 players nationally in both doubles (17) and triples (6).

Finally, fellow freshman Derrisha Lacey was named an Honorable Mention All-American.  As the team's lightning-quick leadoff batter, Lacey batted .355 and scored 46 runs.  She did most of her damage on the base paths though, ranking seventh in the nation with 37 stolen bases on 39 attempts.

Coach Dave Williams' CSUSM softball team finished fourth at the NAIA National Championships in Alabama this week.  It is the best finish in the program's five-year history.
