SALT LAKE CITY – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team led early on, but No.12 Ashford (Iowa) converted the equalizer in the second half as the Cougars and Saints battled to a 1-1 tie on Saturday afternoon at Dumke Field.
Eric Lopez scored off a pass from
Jake Kaiser to give CSUSM a 1-0 lead in the sixth minute. The Cougars held on until they were dealt a blow when Kaiser was shown a red card in the 57
th minute.
27 seconds later, Tony Smith headed in Simon Brown's corner kick to pull the Saints even.
“We were basically holding on to the game the best we could. They had us on our heels and the red [card] put us in a bad spot,” said CSUSM head coach
Ron Pulvers. “But once that happened, the guys really battled together and held on.”
Ashford doubled CSUSM in shots, 22-11, and earned eight more corner kicks in the game. However, a career-high eight saves from

CSUSM will play Trinity Lutheran (Wash.) (8-5-1) tomorrow at 11:00 a.m. The game will be streamed
