SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Erik Mueller of the Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team was named to the 2012 Capital One Academic All-District 8 Men's Soccer First Team, it was announced by the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA) Thursday. The distinction is awarded to recognize the nation's top student-athletes for their combined performances athletically and in the classroom.
Mueller, a junior defender from Newbury Park, Calif., holds a 3.88 cumulative GPA while majoring in Business at CSUSM. Candidates for the award were required to hold at least a 3.0 GPA and to have completed at least one academic year at his/her current institution.
Mueller has started 46 of 47 career games on the Cougar backline and was named captain by his teammates in 2012. He started the first 12 games of the 2012 season before a lower-leg injury halted his season. He helped lead the Cougars to their first-ever Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) conference crown in 2011.
The Academic All-District teams were divided into eight geographic districts across the United States and Canada. First-team Academic All-District honorees advance to the Capital One Academic All-America Team ballot, where first-, second- and third-team All-America honorees will be selected later this month.
The Cougars are preparing for the A.I.I. Championship Tournament, Nov. 9-10 at Mangrum Soccer Field. CSUSM is the defending conference champion.
