The #2 ranked Cal State San Marcos Softball team received a scare against the University of Mobile in their second game of the NAIA National Tournament, but escaped with a 7-5 extra inning victory to move to 2-0 in pool play.
Errors haunted the Cougars throughout the game, committing five in total that accounted for 3 unearned runs, but the Cougar offense came through with enough to pull of the win.
Kimberle Smith earned the start for San Marcos, and pitched a 1-2-3 first inning before running into some trouble in the second that gave the Rams a 2-0 lead.
Cortney Allen entered the game in the third inning to help escape another jam.
In the fourth, the Cougars appeared to take control with a 5 run frame, ignited by
Alyssa Dronenburg's 21
st homerun of the season to lead off the inning. However, Mobile battled back in the bottom of the fourth with three runs to tie the game, courtesy of three CSUSM errors.
The game remained tied at 5 until the 8
th inning, when
Alicia Ingram ripped a single to center with two outs.
Kaitlin McGinley followed with another single and
Alyssa Dronenburg was then walked to load the bases with two outs. Shortstop
Alex Miller then slapped a first pitch single to shallow left that plated both Ingram and McGinley to give the Cougars a 7-5 edge.
Cortney Allen held the Mobile scoreless in the bottom of the eighth to secure the victory. She improves to 22-4 with the win after allowing no earned runs over 6 innings. Allen has yet to give up an earned run this postseason in 29.1 innings.
CSUSM (52-4) will play again Saturday against Southern Nazarene (OK) in their final game of pool play. With a victory, the Cougars will advance to bracket play with the eight remaining teams.
