OAKLAND, Calif. – Trailing by two goals with less than 10 minutes to play,
Scott Rice and
Sullivan Tobin scored in the 85
th and 88
th minute, respectively, to force overtime in the Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team's 3-3 tie at Holy Names on Friday afternoon at Merritt College.
Jake Kaiser handed CSUSM a 1-0 lead in the 20
th minute with the Cougars' first goal of the season, but a sluggish start to the second half by CSUSM saw the Cougars surrender three consecutive goals to HNU, two from Hawks' forward Rasmus Larsson.
Down 3-1 with six minutes to play, Rice made it 2-1 off an assist from
Mason Grimes before Tobin followed with the equalizer less than three minutes from time.
Alex Jaziri nearly broke the stalemate in the second overtime period, but could not put his shot attempt on frame as the teams battled scoreless through the sudden-death frames.
“This game shows the character we have on this team,” said CSUSM head coach
Ron Pulvers. “We battled and battled and battled in the second half, and we finally got those two goals back in the end. Holy Names is a really good team and to battle back like that, I'm very pleased with.”
Landon Sherwood made six saves in his Cougar debut.
CSUSM (0-0-1) will travel to face Pomona Pitzer (Sept. 5) and Fresno Pacific (Sept. 8) before returning to play its first home game on Tuesday, Sept. 11 against The Master's College at 3:00 p.m.
