SAN DIEGO – Alex Jaziri scored in the 93rd minute to lift the Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team, 1-0, over Point Loma Nazarene on Tuesday evening at PLNU Soccer Field.
Early in the first overtime period, Jaziri combined with Angel Mora and Evan Myers along the right side to get in deep inside the PLNU defense. A pair of defenders appeared to dispossess the Cougars, but an indecision between the duo allowed Myers to step in and win the ball.
Myers threaded a pass behind the back line and Jaziri fired a low shot inside the far post with his right foot from a sharp angle for his team-leading fifth goal of the season.
The Cougars won their fourth in their last five matches and end the regular season with a 10-4-2 overall record. It marks the first time since the program's inaugural 2006 season in which CSUSM has registered 10 wins during the regular season.
"Our guys kept getting stronger and stronger as the game went on," said CSUSM head coach Ron Pulvers. "I thought we were resilient as a group and were far more athletic. It made the difference in the game."
CSUSM did well to absorb consistent pressure in the first half, as the Sea Lions outshot the Cougars 11-3. However, CSUSM returned the favor in the second half, outshooting PLNU 11-3.
Zach Sheppard made four saves in goal on his way to his seventh shutout of the year.
The Cougars will look ahead to Nov. 15-16's Association of Independent Institutions (A.I.I.) Conference Championship in Gwinnett, Ga., where they will be the No. 2-seed. The winner of the four-team tournament will receive an automatic bid to the NAIA Tournament, which starts on Nov. 23.
