LAS VEGAS – The Cal State San Marcos men's soccer team continued its record start with a 4-2 upset of No. 22 Rocky Mountain on Sunday morning.
Alex Jaziri's double and goals from Louie Farfan and Evan Myers lifted the Cougars to their fifth-straight win to start the 2013 campaign. In addition, CSUSM (5-0) defeated its first ranked opponent since 2010 and handed RMC (7-1-1) its first loss of the season.
The Cougars left Las Vegas with two wins, including its 3-2 overtime victory on Saturday vs. Great Falls. CSUSM scored seven goals on the weekend and improved to 4-0 away from its home field.
"It's a great start but there's a lot of soccer to be played. We take it one game at a time, but I think these guys are understanding how good they can be," said head coach Ron Pulvers. "They've shown maturity and have been poised thus far. We've got things rolling in the right direction."
Louie Farfan, who had the game-winning assist yesterday versus Great Falls, opened the scoring Sunday thanks to a favorable deflection. Farfan hit a shot from outside the area, but the ball took a high bounce off a defender's leg. The goalkeeper was unable to reverse his direction, as the ball looped over his outstretched hand.
The Cougars made it 2-0 after a clever corner kick to the front post. CSUSM dummied the ball and Evan Myers drove it home on the back end.
RMC pulled within 2-1 on a screamer by current NAIA Player of the Week, Oliver Gore. The striker came into the week leading the nation in goals (13) and points (32).
However, Luka Stevanovic's hustle play helped the Cougars add another before the break. Stevanovic chased down a ball inside the box and was dragged down on a 50-50 with the RMC goalkeeper for a penalty kick.
Jaziri stepped in and converted from the spot to put CSUSM up, 3-1.
"The guys were dialed in. They were focused and ready to go," said Pulvers. "We're young, but our approach to the game was mature and focused. We were on them from the start and carried the game for 90 minutes."
RMC made it interesting by bringing it within 3-2, but Jaziri sealed the game with a sneaky run in behind the RMC's left side. Jaziri confidently finished to the far post just five minutes from time.
"We have to be better, both of their goals came off of bad defensive situations," said Pulvers. "We started strong, but there were a handful of moments that were young mistakes. All in all, it was a commanding performance, especially from our back four."
The team has completely reversed last season's 1-3-1 start. The Cougars won five of their last seven games in 2012 and has now won 10 of their last 12.
The road tests will continue this week, as CSUSM heads off for matches at San Diego Christian (Tues., Sept. 17 ), No. 12 Biola (Thur. Sept. 19) and The Master's College (Sat., Sept. 21).
The Cougars next play at Mangrum Soccer Field on Tuesday, Sept. 24 vs. Westmont.
