Box Score SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos baseball team didn't make a peep at the plate the first eight innings in its non-conference game against Azusa Pacific.
Well, that's why you play nine.
Zach Hedges (4-4) took a six-hit shutout into the ninth inning for APU (25-16), but APU could not secure an out while making two key errors in the final frame. CSUSM (29-15) took advantage to corral its 13
th win in its last 14 games.
Denny Vigo started the ninth-inning rally with a leadoff double to right center.
Dylan Costello followed with a chopper to short and was deemed safe at first when Andrew Carrillo's throw pulled the APU first baseman off the bag.
Pinch-hitter
Brooks Noble tagged a grounder to short that could not be handled by Carrillo for his second error of the inning. Pinch runner
Riley Manquen scored to make it 2-1 and CSUSM had runners on first and second.
Adam Tapia's single loaded the bases before
Tyler Bernard's line-drive single off reliever Luis Martinez brought home Costello to tie it at 2-2.
With the bases loaded and nobody out, APU brought in a fifth infielder with
Terrence Buchanan at the plate.
Buchanan popped Martinez's 2-2 pitch to the left side and it was gloved by a diving Carrillo. However, the lunge put Carrillo out of position and his throw to try and get pinch runner
Ross Lemmel at the plate was short and wide.
For APU, glaring stats in the box score will be the four errors and the 14 runners left on base.
CSUSM starter
Matt Bataska was knocked around a bit in the first inning, but APU could muster just a single run despite three hits. He lasted 2 2/3 innings before giving way to
Clinton Perez, who got out of a third-inning threat by forcing a groundout to third base.
Perez ran into some trouble in the top of the fourth as APU loaded the bases with two down. But,
Hunter Brown came in to get the Cougars out of a jam again by forcing Mitch Dergazarian into an easy groundout at second.
APU loaded the bases again in the top of the sixth, but
Addison Domingo got Matt Kimmel to groundout to Buchanan at second to keep the score 1-0.
CSUSM's best chance to get a legitimate run off Hedges came in the bottom of the seventh, as the Cougars had runners on second and third with two down. But, Hedges threw a 3-2 breaking ball for a called strike to sit down
Terrence Buchanan.
APU added what it thought was a final insurance run in the top of the eighth with a sacrifice fly.
Justin Hertzmann (2-3) earned the win for CSUSM.
CSUSM wraps up its regular season tomorrow afternoon at 3:00 p.m. against Azusa Pacific.
