SAN MARCOS, Calif. – Cal State San Marcos cross country and track standouts
Heidi Swanson and
Steven Ing have been named Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-District, it was announced Thursday.
To be nominated for the award, student-athletes must be a vital part of his/her respective program, hold a 3.30 cumulative grade point average and have at least sophomore academic status. The nominees were voted upon by members of the College Sports Information Directors of America (CoSIDA); the top 10 vote-getters in each district made their respective All-District squads.
Ing and Swanson were honored in District 4, which includes student-athletes from the Western states and Canada. The pair is automatically eligible for the Academic All-America Team, which will be decided on via another vote by CoSIDA members to pare the four all-district teams down into one Academic All-America squad.
Swanson, a Psychology major, put together an impressive senior campaign in cross country and track & field. She registered six top-10 finishes during cross country season and nearly missed out on becoming an All-American with a 31
st finish at the NAIA National Championships. On the track side, she set a new school record in the 1,500m with a time of 4:33.86 at San Diego State's Aztec Invitational on Mar. 28.
Ing, a sophomore Pre-Kinesiology major, was a key component of the men's cross country squad that won its sixth straight conference title. He took home two individual titles and placed in the top 10 in five of the Cougars' eight races. He was named the A.I.I. Most Outstanding Athlete after winning the A.I.I. Championship in a time of 24:53. He was a national finalist in the 5,000m at the NAIA Outdoor Track & Field National Championships.
The Capital One/CoSIDA Academic All-America Team will be released June 18.
