CSUSM Competes in Head Coach’s Namesake Event

IRVINE, Calif. - The Cal State San Marcos track & field team had a solid outing at head coach Steve Scott's namesake event, the Adidas/Steve Scott Invitational, hosted by UC Irvine. Even with temperatures reaching 90 degrees in the two-day event, the Cougars had some remarkable performances.

Deng Akuien kicked things off on Friday with a personal record in the 3,000m steeplechase with a time of 9:14.70; he placed second, just .41 seconds behind first place. The time automatically qualifies Akuien for the NAIA National Championships.

On Saturday, freshman Justin Washington improved his time in the 800m, running 1:54.29. The "B" standard sits at 1:54.00. Anthony Girolamo placed second in his heat, running 1:57.40.

Maurice Strickland improved his personal best in the 110m hurdles, running 14.28.
Strickland already had the "A" standard in this event. Strickland also competed in the pole vault, clearing 4.30m or 14 feet 1.25 inches.

Damon Moore, who already has an "A" standard in the 400m hurdles, ran a 54.72 in the event.
 
Zach Laurenzana and Steven Ing had strong showings in the 1500m, running 3:57.15 and 3:57.44, respectively. The "B" standard for the event is 3:56.50.

Greg Talley placed fifth in the high jump, with a leap of 2.00m, or 6 feet 6.75 inches. Talley has already qualified for the NAIA National Championships in the event.

On the women's side, Meghan Hamlin placed ninth in the 5,000m, running 18:33 in the process. The 4X100m relay team of Savanna Holmen, Brittany Hollie, Kamarria Rehn, and Amber Rosario qualified for the NAIA National Championships with a time of 47.81.

Heidi Swanson, who already has a "B" standard in the 800m, had a strong performance in the heat running 2:15.15. Charlotte Kuzminski also ran under the "B" standard running 2:15.53. Cristen Lane narrowly missed the "B" standard by .06 running 2:16.06.

Rosario tied her season best in the 100m hurdles, running 14.40. Hollie also had a strong showing in the same event running 14.81. Both Rosario and Hollie are qualified for the NAIA National Championships in the event.

The Cougars' next event will be at Oxy Invitational held at Occidental College next Saturday.
