SEASIDE, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos volleyball team dropped a five-set heartbreaker to Cal State Monterey Bay in California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) play on Saturday night at the Kelp Bed. The final scores were 25-22, 23-25, 25-23, 18-25 and 15-13.
With 11 ties in the fifth set, CSUSM held the advantage until the 12-12 mark where Monterey Bay clinched the match with a 3-1 run.
The Cougars fall to 4-13 overall and 1-8 in conference action. The Otters improve to 4-8, 3-4 CCAA.
Along with her 14 kills, senior
Taylor DeGraaf tallied a season-high 25 digs en route to her third double-double of the season. She also registered three of CSUSM's seven aces on the night. Senior
Jordan Banich led the Cougar offense with 15 kills. Freshman
Lauren Lee added five blocks.
CSUSM forced a fifth set after evening the match with a 25-18 victory in the fourth behind a .306 clip.
In all, the match featured 45 ties and 18 lead changes. CSUMB finished with a slight edge in kills (66-62) and blocks (11-7). The Cougars led in two categories; digs (95-90) and aces (7-4).
Monterey Bay's Jessica Malcolm led all hitters with 21 kills.
The Cougars wrap up their five-game road trip next weekend with stops at Cal State Dominguez Hills (Oct. 9) and Cal State L.A. (Oct. 10).
