CSUSM Plays Long Ball in Rout of CSUSB

LAS VEGAS – The No. 12 Cal State San Marcos softball team got some revenge against Cal State San Bernardino, using a six-run second inning to put away the Coyotes early in an 8-1 victory in the Cougars' opening game of the three-day Desert Stinger Classic on Friday morning at Majestic Park Softball Complex.

CSUSM (6-3) fell to CSUSB (3-4) in both ends of a doubleheader in the Cougars' home opener last Saturday at CSUSM Softball Field. But this time around, Olivia Lucatuorto homered, Naomi Amu pounded a grand slam for the second consecutive game, and Ashley Dagenais (3-2) delivered five innings for her third consecutive victory in as many appearances.

Things started a bit rocky for Dagenais, as she hit Nicole Nobbe to lead off the game before granting Nobbe second base on an illegal pitch. After a one-out walk, Victoria Lievanos' knocked in Nobbe with a single to make it 1-0 CSUSB.

Lucatuorto was quick to answer with a solo shot in the bottom half of the first inning, tying the score 1-1. It was her second home run of the season.

In the second inning, Quiambao was hit by a pitch before Brogan Hoenisch singled through the left side. Tayler Ybarra walked to load the bases before Caylyn Rodriguez singled to bring home Quiambao and make it 2-1.

Lindsay Cerulle reloaded the bases with one out on a bunt single, but it looked as though the rally would be cut a little short when Lucatuorto struck out.

However, Melyssa Bellamy was hit by a pitch, forcing home pinch runner Breana Reyes to make it 3-1.

Then, Amu busted it wide open by clearing the bases with her third homerun of the season, and second grand slam.

It was CSUSM's third grand slam of this season.

From there, Dagenais went to work, retiring the Coyotes in order in the third inning and allowing just two hits the rest of the way. Katie Wilkinson worked the final two innings for CSUSM, striking out two without allowing a hit or a walk.

Bellamy knocked in Rodriguez with an RBI single in the bottom of the third to make it 8-1.

Rodriguez and Robyn Alvara were both 2-for-3 on the day. Quiambao doubled in the third inning.

CSUSM will play two games on Saturday at 11:30 a.m. and 2 p.m. against Black Hills State (S.D.) and Montana State-Billings.
