CSUSM will have an entirely different look this season with eight new players, two returning letter-winners and three redshirts from the 2015-16 campaign.
The Cougars attracted a crop of former NCAA Division I talent for this season, including
Joe Boyd (Cal State Fullerton),
Ethan Alvano (Eastern Michigan),
Nick Pallas (UT Arlington),
Josh Spiers (Loyola Marymount),
Cody Johnson (Loyola-Chicago),
Novian Cherry (Savannah State) and
Brian Wright (UC Riverside).
CSUSM is entering its final year of the three-year transition phase to full NCAA Division II membership status. The Cougars will play their second year of California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) competition in 2016-17 and will not be eligible for postseason play. Full NCAA DII membership with NCAA DII postseason eligibility will happen in fall 2017.
The Cougars went 15-12 overall in their first season of NCAA Division II and CCAA competition in 2015-16.
CSUSM officially starts its season this Friday and Saturday on the road against Biola and Concordia (Calif.)
San Diego State is coming off a 76-63 exhibition victory over UC San Diego last Thursday.
