"We are beyond ready and excited for this season and our 2016 schedule. We play some of the very best teams in the country throughout, and to have the ability to compete here on campus is going to be special. We look forward to testing our young team of six freshmen, seven sophomores, two juniors and three seniors against the best," said CSUSM head coach
Andrea Leonard.
The Cougars open the campaign on Thursday, September 1 at 4 p.m. against La Sierra in The Sports Center, in what will be the first-ever athletic event in CSUSM's new home.
The following two days, Sept. 2-3, the Cougars will host the five-team Cougar Classic at The Sports Center featuring Johnson & Wales (Colo.), Westmont, Fort Lewis and Sonoma State. The Cougars take on Johnson & Wales (Sept. 2), Westmont (Sept. 3) and Fort Lewis (Sept. 3). The tournament will consist of nine total matches over the two days; tournament passes will be available for purchase at a later date.
"Not only do we get to officially open our new venue, we are hosting our first tournament here on campus in The Sports Center and providing some exciting volleyball the very first weekend," said Leonard.
Following the CCAA/GNAC/PacWest Crossover Tournament, Sept. 8-10 in Hayward, the Cougars will return home and open its California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA) schedule against Cal State L.A. and Cal State Dominguez Hills on Sept. 16 and 17, respectively.
On Sept. 20, CSUSM travels to take on Point Loma Nazarene, which qualified for the NCAA Division II Championship Tournament. Four days later, the Cougars visit UC San Diego, which advanced to the NCAA DII West Region semifinals in 2015.
October 7 will be circled on the Cougar calendar, as reigning CCAA regular season and tournament champion Sonoma State comes into The Sports Center. The next day, the Cougars face San Francisco State.
The midpoint of the Cougars' CCAA regular season schedule features a home match against Cal Poly Pomona on Oct. 14 followed by a road contest at CCAA runner-up and NCAA DII West Region finalist Cal State San Bernardino.
CSUSM will host CSUSB on Friday, Oct. 28.
The Cougars travel for three straight matches prior to hosting UC San Diego in their regular season finale on Nov. 12 at 7 p.m.
CSUSM will once again not be eligible for CCAA or NCAA postseason play as stipulated by the rules put forth in the NCAA Division II transition process. 2016 is scheduled to be the final year of the transition.
