Concordia PreviewAll-time vs. CUI: 1-5-2
Last Meeting: L, 0-3 (Sept. 17, 2014); Three first-half goals by then-NAIA No. 5 Concordia put then-NAIA No. 15 CSUSM in a hole it could not climb out of in the NAIA Game of the Week in Irvine. The Eagles scored in the sixth minute and then added two more in the final eight minutes of the first half. The loss by the Cougars made their record at the time 2-2-1 overall, but CSUSM would rally to stay unbeaten over its next 13 matches. Their next (and final) loss of the season would come over two months later in the NAIA second round vs. NAIA-No. 2 Concordia (Ore.).
CUI Breakdown: Concordia is also in NCAA Division II Candidacy Year Two - the second year of a three-year transition to full NCAA Division II membership. The Eagles have also played in a pair of overtime road games to begin the 2015 campaign. On Sept. 3, the Eagles fell to UC San Diego, 2-1, in overtime. Then, on Sept. 5, CUI drew with No. 18 Cal State L.A., 1-1. CSULA has been picked to win the CCAA.
Opening WeekThe Cougars went to overtime in their first two matches of 2015, but could not come away with a victory. In their opener on Sept. 3 at San Diego Christian,
Natalie Lara put the Cougars ahead in the 15
th minute, but the Hawks were able to equalize less than four minutes from full-time. On Saturday at Biola, the teams went 98 minutes without a goal until Amanda Otto netted the game-winner off a corner kick.
New Faces ContributingCSUSM has been having a number of new faces contributing early in the year. Freshman goalkeeper
Allie Jara has played every minute thus far, and fellow freshmen
Jenna Hernandez and
Emily Haugen have started both matches.
The Bobby Renneisen FileCSUSM head coach
Bobby Renneisen, now in his second season as the man in charge, holds an 11-4-6 (.667) career coaching record. Renneisen spent eight years from 2006-2013 as an assistant on then-head coach
Ron Pulvers' coaching staff at CSUSM.
New ConferenceCal State San Marcos is a part of the 13-team
California Collegiate Athletic Association (CCAA), made up of 12 CSU institutions and UC San Diego. The CCAA is one of the premier NCAA Division II leagues in the nation. Its teams have won more national championships (153) than any other conference.
Preseason CCAA Coaches PollThe Cougars came in ranked No. 11 in the
2015 CCAA Preseason Coaches Poll released last week. The Cougars received 37 total points and finished ahead of Humboldt State and Cal State Dominguez Hills. Cal State L.A. was picked to win the conference for the third year in a row. It is the first season in which CSUSM is competing in the CCAA.
