SAN MARCOS, Calif. – The Cal State San Marcos Department of Athletics will host the Fifth Annual Student-Athlete Awards and Hall of Fame Celebration on Thursday, April 17
th at the brand-new University Student Union (5:30 p.m. – 8:15 p.m.).
Due to popular demand, the event will include dinner for student-athletes and invited guests from 5:30 p.m. – 6:30 p.m. In addition, a live jazz band will provide entertainment and there will be a drum performance by men's basketball player Quincy Lawson.
The winner of a two-year lease for a 2014 MINI Cooper will be drawn during the ceremony. Student-athletes, coaches, administrators, donors and friends of the program have been selling raffle tickets throughout the 2013-14 school year in order to raise money for student-athlete scholarships.
A variety of awards will be handed out, including the Highest Team GPA Award, the Volunteer of the Year Award and the Male & Female Student-Athlete of the Year Awards.
In addition, for the first time ever, the Student-Athlete Advisory Committee Awards will be announced. Every CSUSM student-athlete had an opportunity to vote for the SAAC Awards, which include Team of the Year, Coach of the Year and the Spirit Cup.
The finalists for the Team of the Year are: women's volleyball, men's basketball and women's soccer. Coach of the Year will come down to:
Steve Scott (cross country & track),
Andrea Leonard (women's volleyball),
Ron Pulvers (soccer) and
Jim Saia (men's basketball). The finalists for the Spirit Cup are: men's and women's soccer, women's volleyball, softball, and men's and women's track & field.
Former women's soccer standout Kaycee Gunion (2008-11)
will be inducted as the seventh member of the CSUSM Athletics Hall of Fame.
